Pitt Wrestlers Wrap Up Midlands Championship

PITTSBURGH - The Pitt wrestling team wrapped up competition in the Midlands Championship Wednesday night with three placing in the tournament including Anthony Zanetta, Eric Albright and Ryan Tomei. As a team, the Panthers finished 12th with 52.5 points on the week.
Anthony Zanetta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) began the day at 125 with a 4-3 decision over Eric Olanowski of Michigan State. Zanetta fell to fifth-seeded Matt Steintrager, 4-1 and No. 7 seed Jason Lara of Oregon State, 5-3 to finish 8th on the day.
Sophomore Tyler Nauman (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) lost in his first consolation match, 4-3 to sixth-seeded Seth Ciasulli of Lehigh at 141.
Senior Eric Albright (York, Pa./Red Lion Area/Virginia) lost to top seeded Brent Metcalf of Iowa in the 149 semifinals (3:51), and fell 3-1 in a sudden victory to Mitch Mueller of Iowa State. Albright then earned a win by medical forfeit over sixth-seeded Anthony D'Alie of Central Michigan to finish fifth.
Matt Wilps (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley), at 197, lost to No. 4 seed Trevor Brandvold of Wisconsin in first round of consolations, 7-2.
Junior heavyweight Ryan Tomei (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) finished seventh on the week. Tomei earned his placing after defeating Ed Bordas, 3-1, of Rider; falling to No. 1 seed Aaron Anspach of Lions Wrestling Club (2:06); and earning a 3-0 decision over DJ Russo of Rutgers.
The Panthers will be back in action on Jan. 9 beginning at 10 a.m. against Waynesburg, Columbia and Eastern Michigan at Fitzgerald Field House.
