Wrestling Concludes Day One Of Midlands Championship

The Pitt wrestling team concluded day one of the Midlands Championship with five wrestlers still alive in competition including Anthony Zanetta, Tyler Nauman, Eric Albright, Matt Wilps and Ryan Tomei. As a team, Pitt sits at ninth with 41.5 points on the day.
True freshman Anthony Zanetta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) started the Panthers off with a strong day at 125 including a 4-0 decision over Ilyass Elmassouri of Rider and a 9-4 decision over Caleb Flores of Northern Iowa, advancing to the quarterfinals. Zanetta fell 5-3 to the top seeded Brandon Precin and will begin competition Wednesday in the consolation round.
At 133, senior Jimmy Conroy (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) fell in the opening round, 4-2, to Tristen Deshazer of Northern Illinois. Conroy rebounded in the wrestleback to win the next two rounds including a 9-0 major decision over Nathan Fitzenreider of North Central. Conroy defeated Joey Lazor of Northern Iowa, 14-6, prior to falling to ninth-seeded David Marble of Bucknell, 10-7.
Sophomore Tyler Nauman (Middletown, Pa./Middletown), seeded fifth at 141, defeated John Reagan of Bucknell 8-5, and 12th-seeded Juan Archuleta of Penn, 9-6 to advance to the semifinals. Nauman fell to fourth-seeded Joey Slaton of Iowa, 9-6 and will compete in the consolation round.
Senior Eric Albright (York, Pa./Red Lion Area/Virginia) advanced to the semifinals at 149 with an 8-0 major decision over Justin McDermitt of Central Michigan, and a 4-3 decision over Greg Lewis of Clarion. Albright went on to defeat Kevin LeValley of Bucknell, 9-6 to advance to the semifinals.
At 197, Matt Wilps (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) entered the tournament seeded No. 8. Wilps defeated Justin McKain of Kearney, 9-3, and ninth-seeded Tyler Smith of Rider, 9-0 to advance to the quarterfinals, where he fell to top-seeded Jake Varner of Iowa State, 13-2. Wilps will begin competition in the consolation round Wednesday.
In the heavyweight division, junior Ryan Tomei (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) earned falls over Dustin Bles of Triton (4:49) and Eric Thompson of Iowa State (5:56). Tomei fell to fourth-seeded Dom Bradley of Missouri, 5-3, but will continue in competition tomorrow.
