Panthers Find Success at Akron Invitational

AKRON, Ohio — The University of Pittsburgh track and field teams wrapped up action at the Akron Invitational and Tyson Invitation this past weekend. Both the men’s and women’s teams had a strong showing in Akron, collecting multiple top-10 performances.
Jermaine Lowery and Johnny Dogun finished within three-tenths of a second of each other in the 200 meter dash, with Lowery earning ninth place at 22.10 and Dogun 10th place at 22.46.
In the distance events, Teddy Miller led the Panthers, finishing seventh in the Gold Division of the 3,000 meter run in 8:40.32 and fifth in the Blue Division’s one mile run, crossing the line at 4:18.00. Miller was edged in the one mile by teammate Matthew Norwood who finished one second better at 4:17.00 for fourth place. In the 3,000 meter Blue Division run, Kyle Kaminski placed third with a time of 8:55.25.
On the field events side, Folarin Ijelu placed sixth in the Gold Division long jump and fourth in the Blue Division high jump with a leaps of 6.89 meters and 1.90 meters respectively. James Pittenger leapt 1.95 meters for second place in the Blue Division high jump. Garrett Larkin continued to perform well in the throwing events this indoor season, collecting a second place mark in the Blue Division shot put and an eighth place finish in the Blue Division weight throw with marks of 15.98 meters and 15.18 meters respectively.
On the women’s side, Cambry Jones and Janessa Murphy finished second and sixth respectively in the Gold Division 60 meter dash, running 7.68 and 7.73. In the Gold Division 200 meter dash, Raquel Bender ran 25.16 for second place. Jazmin Hunt placed fifth in the 60 meter hurdles Gold Divison, running 8.92. In the Blue Division’s 400 meter dash, Caitlin Cocilova placed second with a time of 58.81.
In the distance events, Pitt went two-three-four-five in the 800 meter run of the Blue Division. Miya Johnson ran 2:14.49 and was followed by Gizelle Johnson (2:15.60), Kari Hedderick (2:15.97) and Susan Martinez (2:16.34). Melissa Vignetti and Rachel Erny placed fifth and eighth respectively in the 3,000 meter Blue Division run, going 10:51.25 and 11:02.06. Taking fourth place in the indoor pentathlon and totaling 3,107 points was Kari Weimerskirch.
In the field events, Sarah Anderson led the Panther women, collecting a second place finish in the shot put (13.30 meters) and fifth in the weight throw (15.40 meters). In the Blue Divison long jump, Shanae Thomas and Wunmi Fapohunda went one-two with jumps of 5.51 meters and 5.48 meters respectively. Victoria Toso claimed first place in the Blue Divison’s pole vault with a mark of 3.47 meters.
Up next for the Panther men and women is the Big East Indoor Championships, held in New York City, N.Y. , Feb. 21-22.
