Panther Women Strong in Field Events at 49er Classic

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh track and field team got off to a strong start this outdoor season at the Irwin Belk Track & Field in Charlotte North Carolina. Competition for the Panthers began on Friday and wrapped up on Saturday.
It was a weekend of first place finishes for the women. Sophomore Sarah Anderson led the women’s team with the only first place finish of the day on Friday. Her hammer throw of 47.00 meters was good for gold. On Saturday, the women dominated the javelin with Nicole Cherry and Kelsey Voltz securing first and second place respectively. Anita James also earned first place for the Panthers with a leap of 11.79 meters in the triple jump. In the high jump, Kari Weimerskirch captured second with a height of 1.60 meters.
Indoor Big East Champion Mycaiah Clemons also led the women’s team with her first place finish in the 400 meter hurdles. Kari Hedderick and Gizelle Joshua had a good weekend as well ,finishing third and forth respectively with times of 2:15 and 2:16 in the 800 meter run.
Up next for the Panthers are the Fred Hardy Invitational in Richmond, Va and the Stanford Invitational in California.
