RICHMOND, Va. -- The University of Pittsburgh's women's outdoor track and field team traveled to the Fred Hardy Invitational this weekend, excelling throughout the two-day meet held at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Va.
Pitt swept the top four places in the 100 meter dash, with Janessa Murphy and Da'Lynn Mills both running a top time of 12.42 seconds with Raquel Bender and Kaetlyn Brown following behind at 12.47 and 12.64 respectively. Patricia Anyanwu placed seventh in the 200 meter dash in a time of 26.29 seconds.
In the distance events, the Panthers took four of the top seven places in the 800 meter run, with Kari Hedderick leading the way with a time of 2:17.25. Gizelle Joshua (2:19.05), Miya Johnson (2:20.97) and Susan Martinez (2:21.34) went four-five-and six to round out the Panther placers. Rachel Erny was sixth in the 5,000 meter run (18:40.77) while Melissa Vignetti (5:04.06) was ninth in the 1,500 meter run.
Caitlin Cocilova paced Pitt in the 100 meter hurdles, finishing sixth in a time of 15.92 and was edged by teammate Brianna Broyles in the 400 meter hurdles by two-tenths of a second as they finished three-four in 1:04.91 and 1:05.11 respectively.
The Panther relay teams also enjoyed success on the day. The 4x100 meter relay team comprising of Mills, Murphy, Cambrya Jones and Mycaiah Clemons captured first place, running a 47.53 while the 4x400 meter relay squad of Anyanwu, Hedderick, Brown and Clemons finished third at 3:57.07. Joshua, Hedderick, Martinez and Johnson led the 4x800 meter relay team to a first place finish, running nine seconds fast than second place Richmond at 9:10.47.
Pitt women flooded the podium in the events, starting with the high jump where Mills, Kari Weimerskirch and Erinn McMahon went two-three-four respectively. Janelle Adams finished fourth in the pole vault with a height of 3.10 meters while Shanae' Thomas and Anita James finished third and fourth in the long jump with leaps of 5.50 and 5.49 meters respectively. James was tops in the women's triple jump with a mark of 11.65 meters.
Sarah Anderson continued the field event success, taking fourth in the shot put with a mark of 12.70 and second in the hammer throw with a heave of 49.84 meters. Nicole Cherry and Leah Ulizio finished first and second in the javelin with distances of 38.55 meters and 36.71 meters respectively.
Up next for the Panthers will be the Texas Relays, held April 1-4 in Austin, Texas and the Aggie Invitational, held April 3-4 in Greensboro, N.C.
