Women's Track Competes in Multiple Invitationals over Weekend

PITTSBURGH — The track and field teams competed in three different cities across the country this past weekend at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C. and the Aggie Invitational in Greensboro, N.C.
In Austin, Texas, members of the women’s team took part in the 82nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays which were held at the Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas. The meet lasted April 1-4 and never fails to be an exciting spectacle. The women made a good showing at the meet as they competed in several relays and individual events.
The 400-meter relay team of Mycaiah Clemons, Janessa Murphy, Da’Lynn Mills, and Raquel Bender came in 23rd with a time of 46.92 in the prelims. Caitlin Brown, Patricia Anyanwu, and Brianna Broyles later joined Clemons to take 29th in the preliminary of the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 3:47.49. Mills, Brown, Anyanwu, and Cambrya Jones also took part in the 1,600 meter sprint medley relay claiming 13th in a time of 4:18.50. On the last day of competition, the 4x200 meter relay team of Mills, Broyles, Bender, and Jones captured fifth place in the finals with a time of 1:38.90.
Broyles and Clemons were the only two women to compete in the individual 100 meter hurdles. Clemons captured 12th with and NCAA qualifying time of 13.83 in the preliminaries. Broyles captured 40th in the prelims of the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.84.
Meanwhile in North Carolina, other members of the Pitt women’s team ran at the Wallace Wade Stadium at Duke University. Ali Briggs competed in the 1,500 meter run and took 46th place with a time of 4:54.42. The women paced one another in the 800 meter run with Gizelle Joshua finishing first for Pittsburgh and 13th overall in a time of 2:13.88. Joshua was followed by Miya Johnson who crossed the line in 2:14.10 for 16th, Kari Hedderick who finished in 18th with a time of 2:14.34, Susan Martinez who came in at 2:20.23 for 36th, and Ali Briggs who clocked in at 2:25.35 for 40th.
At the Aggie Relays, Jazmin Hunt led the Panther hurdlers in the 100 meter hurdles, finishing 14th in a time of 16.02. In the 400 meter hurdles, Caitlyn Cocilova was eighth in a time of 1:05.00.
Melissa Vignetti was second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, clocking in at a time of 11:47.83. Kari Weimerskirch was third in the high jump with a mark of 1.63 meters while Anita James finished fourth in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump with a leaps of 5.49 meters and 11.66 meters respectively.
In the throwing events, Virginia Thistle and Robin Gilmore placed fifth and sixth with marks of 37.74 and 37.31 respectively. Sarah Anderson paced the women in the hammer throw, placing second with a meet-breaking mark of 48.65 meters. Pitt took three of the top five places in the javelin, with Nicole Cherry leading the way with a first-place mark of 47.69 meters, a new meet record. Kelsey Voltz was third (39.25 meters) and Leah Ulizio fifth (35.24 meters).
Tori Toso, Janelle Adams and Carrie Mavrikis finished second, third and fifth in the pole vault. Toso edged Adams by three-tenths of a meter, 3.50-3.20 while Mavrikis cleared 2.90 meters.
Up next is the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. and the Bucknell Outdoor Classic in Lewisburg, Pa.
