CLEARWATER, Fla. —For the second time in as many days, the University of Pittsburgh baseball team has been the target of severe rain storms here on the coast of Florida. Tonight’s scheduled 8 p.m. elimination game against No. 3 West Virginia University has been postponed due to periodic rain delays throughout the day.
The Louisville – Notre Dame game, originally scheduled for 5 p.m., was delayed just over two hours and eventually postponed after three innings of play, forcing the Panthers and Mountaineers to come back tomorrow to play for the right to stay.
The No. 2 Panthers dropped a 12-2 decision to No. 2 South Florida in their first game of the tournament this morning. West Virginia was upset in first-round action on opening day by the sixth-seeded Connecticut Huskies. UConn used a six-run eighth inning to come-from-behind, upsetting the higher-seeded Mountaineers.
Pitt and West Virginia will meet for the fourth time in the past two weeks after squaring-off in the season-ending Big East Conference series at Trees Field May 15-16. The Panthers took the first two games from West Virginia, 9-1 and 13-12, clinching a spot in the 2009 Big East Championship before dropping the series finale 16-4.
First pitch tomorrow will be approximately 35 minutes following the conclusion of the Louisville – Notre Dame game at Bright House Field here in Clearwater, Fla.
