Panther Women Finish Eighth at Big East Championships

VILLANOVA, Pa. — The University of Pittsburgh women’s track and field team tallied 44 points to finish in eighth place at the 2009 Big East Outdoor Championships, hosted by Villanova University this weekend.
Mycaiah Clemons continued her season of success, capturing her second Big East Championship of the year, running an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 13.59 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles. Clemons also ran a regional qualifying time in the prelims of the 400 meter hurdles and finished seventh in the finals with a time of 1:03.39.
Brianna Broyles followed close behind Clemons in the 400 meter hurdles, taking eighth place with a time of 1:05.33. Cambrya Jones turned in two strong performances in the 100 and 200 meter sprints. She finished fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 11.87 seconds, qualifying for the ECAC Championships. In the 200 meters, she hit an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 23.77 seconds, taking second place and earning All-Big East honors.
Janessa Murphy recorded a mark of 5.96 meters in the long jump, taking fourth place and earning a slot at the ECAC Championships. Anita James followed behind in fifth place with a mark of 5.76 meters. James earned All-Big East honors in the triple jump with her third place finish of 12.14 meters, an ECAC Championship mark.
Kaitlyn Flynn tallied 4,584 points in the heptathlon to capture fifth place and punch her ticket to the ECAC Championship meet while the 4x400 meter relay team posted an ECAC qualifying time of 3:49.63, taking ninth place.
The Panthers will travel to Princeton, N.J, May 15-17, to compete in the ECAC Championships.
