PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer dropped its fourth straight game of the season and second in a row at home, falling 2-0 to the visiting Explorers of La Salle University in the final game of the 2009 City of Pittsburgh Invitational.
Despite controlling the ball and outplaying the Explorers (2-1-1) for much of the first half, Pitt (1-4) went into the locker room at halftime down 1-0. Ryan Richter was in perfect position, grabbing a rebound off the cross bar from 10 yards in the 34th minute of the game to put La Salle ahead 1-0.
The Panthers continued their aggressive play in the second half, but could not capitalize through their four corner kicks. For the game, the Panthers out shot the Explorers 17-11 and held a seven-to-one edge in corner kicks.
Glenroy Chapman put La Salle in front 2-0 in the 55th minute with Jeff Pio getting the assist. Freshman goalie Keegan Gunderson made his second straight start in net for Pitt, making five saves on the day.
The Panthers will be in action again Friday, Sept. 18 as they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio for their Big East Conference opener against the Bearcats. Start time for the evening affair is set for 7 p.m.
