Cross Country Opens the 2009 Season on Saturday

PITTSBURGH–The University of Pittsburgh cross country team will begin its 2009 season this Saturday, Sept. 5, at the Duquesne Duals, hosted by Duquesne University. Pitt’s men’s team will open the day with an 8k race at 9:00 a.m. in Schenley Park. The women’s 5k race will immediately follow the conclusion of the men’s event.
This year’s race features host Duquesne, Canisius, Carnegie Mellon, Juniata, Niagra, St. Bonaventure, St. Vincent and Wheeling Jesuit.
At last year’s Duquesne Duals, three members of the men’s cross country team finished in the top 10 including sophomore Greg Kareis (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area) who finished fifth and juniors Teddy Miller (Ambler Pa./Ambler) and Joshua Christopher (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) who crossed the tape in seventh place and 10th, respectively.
Seniors Sam Weiser (New Castle, Pa./Lincoln/Army) and Kyle Kaminski (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) also finished in the top 20, by placing 11th and 17th, respectively.
The women’s team returns sophomores Miya Johnson (Shamong, N.J./Lenape Regular) and Rachel Erny (Brentwood, Pa./Brentwood) who both finished in the top 20 in 2008.
At last year’s Duquesne Duals both Pitt’s men and women teams finished second.
