PITTSBURGH — The University of Pittsburgh men’s soccer team travels to Morgantown, W.V. today for its first game in the West Virginia Nike Classic Tournament. The Panthers will join host West Virginia, Buffalo and UC Santa Barbara in the two-day event held at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium Sept. 4 and 6th.
The Panthers (1-0) will open against Buffalo in the first game of the tournament at 5 p.m. The game will mark just the second game of the 2009 season for Pitt and the season opener for the Bulls. On Sunday, the Panthers will square off against No. 16 UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos, the 2006 NCAA champions and winners of four of the past six Big West Conference championships, enter the tournament with a 1-0 mark.
Pitt picked up a win in its season opener on Sept. 1 over Robert Morris. The Panthers were powered by three second-half goals by freshman Alex Fischetti and seniors Matt Baker and Michael McDade. The win was Pitt’s first season-opening win since 2004.
Game time for Sunday against the Gauchos is slated for 11 a.m. at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
