Women's Volleyball Sweeps Rutgers

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J.—The University of Pittsburgh women’s volleyball team earned a straight-set sweep over Rutgers, 3-0, Friday evening at College Ave. Gym. The Panthers improved to 7-11 on the season and 2-1 in Big East action with scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-8.
Seniors Amy Town and Imani Harper tallied match-highs with 13 kills, a piece. Town added four digs and four aces, while Harper chipped in three blocks in the contest. Additionally, junior Kiesha Leggs posted seven kills with a .545 hitting clip.
Senior Alyssa King collected 32 assists, while sophomore Margy Acton held down the defense with 12 digs.
The first set was full of eight ties and six lead changes. The last tie of the set was at 16-16, following a kill from Town. Pitt took an 18-16 lead with a Scarlet Knight (7-9, 0-3 Big East) error and a Harper kill.
Rutgers would take a timeout, but the Panthers rallied a 3-1 run to take a 21-17 advantage. Rutgers would cut it to two, 22-20, a few serves later. However, Pitt took a timeout and won three of the next four serves to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Panthers held Rutgers to .048 hitting. King recorded seven assists on the eight kills.
In the second set, the Panthers hit for a match-high .562, including 20 kills. Town swung for a .500 hitting percentage, earning a game-high six kills. Harper and Leggs added five kills in the middle set. Leggs and King combined on the lone block of the set.
Pitt trailed early in the set, but after six ties the Panther took the eventual lead at 14-13 with a kill from Leggs.
Next, in the final set, Pitt cruised to its win with 14 kills on .491 hitting. The Panthers committed just one hitting error in the contest. King record seven assists in the game, while Town chipped in six kills and three aces.
Pitt faces Seton Hall on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m.
