PITTSBURGH—Senior Laura Barnes set a meet record, as the University of Pittsburgh swimming and diving team hosted its annual Blue-Gold Meet at Trees Pool, this morning. Gold won with a score of 146-121.
Leading the Blue team, Barnes won the 100 breast, turning in a record-setting performance of 1:04.45. Barnes eclipsed the previous standard of 1:04.58 set by Lindsey Tiberio in 2004. Barnes later attempted to break her 200 breast record of 2:19.11, set last season, but fell a little short for a first-place performance of 2:20.90.
Later, Blue recorded another first-place finish when senior Caitlin Trant won the 100 fly. Her time of 57.35 tied the Blue-Gold Meet record. She matched Amy Miteff’s 2005 mark.
Blue continued with first-place finishes as Lauren Matevish finished first in the 200 fly with a time of 2:07.82. Gold’s Tamara Lelli followed in second with a time of 2:10.63. Matevish was also second in the 500 free at 5:05.02.
Swimming nearly four seconds faster than the rest of the field, sophomore Joanna Budzis won the 200 back with a finish of 2:05.57 for Blue.
Budzis also outlasted the field with a 58.90 performance in the 100 back. Junior Yolandi Van Rooyen and sophomore Megan Bender tied for second (1:00.17) in the same race. Budzis topped off the day with a first-place performance in the 200 IM for Blue (2:08.68).
The women opened with a first-place performance by Pitt’s Gold team, with a time of 1:53.91. The winning team consisted of freshman Kate Dunseith, sophomore Yolandi Der Merwe, senior Katie Cutrell and junior Elena Spak.
Spak would later earn two individual first-place finishes. Her time of 52.98 in the 100 free was nearly two second faster than second place. Earlier in the meet she would place first in the 50 free at 24.11. Sophomore Meghann McGoldrick of Gold trailed for second in the 50 free with a time of 24.39.
Gold kept pushing, as sophomore Kelsey Herbst won the 200 free when she stopped the clock at 1:55.43. Blue finished second, as freshman Julie Harrison turned in a 1:56.22 performance. Herbst later won the 500 free with a time of 5:04.79.

Gold’s 200 free relay team finished first in the final event of the meet (1:38.64). The squad was made up of senior Kristen McMullan, Lelli, senior Emily DeStefano and Spak.
