Blue Wins Annual Blue-Gold Meet

PITTSBURGH—Blue runs away with a win, as the University of Pittsburgh swimming and diving team hosted its annual Blue-Gold Meet at Trees Pool, this morning. Blue earned a victory with a score of 150-98.
The swimming events opened with a record-breaking performance as Blue’s 200 medley relay team set a meet record at 1:32.77. The squad was made up of sophomore Adam Maczewski, junior Ben Solari and seniors Alex McLaren and Andrezj Dubiel. They eclipsed the previous standard of 1:32.94 set back in 2004.
Later, each member of the relay would give Blue two first-place performances, individually. First, Dubiel recorded a top finish in both the 50 and 100 free. He went 21.23 in the 50 and then 46.77 in the 100. Dubiel’s time in the 100 free was just shy of the meet record (46.01) set last season.
Nearly setting a record himself, Maczewski won the 100 back. His time of 50.62 was shy of Eric Bugby’s 50.51 (2003). Maczewski also won the 200 back with a time of 1:52.09.
Solari claimed first in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. His time of 58.98 won the 100, while his time of 2:08.92 won the 200.
Rounding out individual first-place finishes from the opening relay, McLaren turned in a 51.04 in the 100 fly and then a 1:53.63 in the 200 fly.
Later, in the final event of the day, Blue won the 200 free relay when it touched the wall at 1:26.23. The squad was made up of Dubiel, Maczewski, Van Roekel and junior Christoph Berger.
Blue would also earn a first-place performance in the 200 free, when junior Jake Van Roekel touched the wall at 1:44.24. Gold’s Alex Rodenkirk finished second at 1:48.62. Van Roekel was also second in the 100 free at 46.89.
In the final individual swimming event, freshman Robert Power won the 200 IM for Gold, as he touched the wall at 1:56.74. Solari was second with a time of 1:57.10.
Junior Morne Boshoff led Gold to a first-place performance in the 500 free with at time of 4:43.31. He was followed by Blue’s Jared Kolwyck.
In 1M diving, senior Zane McLain of the Gold team led all with 319.80 points. Freshman Aaron Snyder and senior Charles Hauser of Blue claimed second and third, respectively.
Senior Collin Forner would secure another first-place finish for Blue on the 3M event with a 362.70 performance. Sophomore Eric Moore of Gold placed second with a score of 303.08.
Pitt opens its 2010-11 season on Friday, Oct. 15, with a 3 p.m. meet against Buffalo.
