Nike Pro Combat in the Pittsburgh Panthers Team Store
PITTSBURGH - In a special announcement made on Sept. 1 in New York City, Nike unveiled its exclusive high-performance Nike Pro Combat uniforms in new designs for 10 elite college programs. Pitt will suit up in the specialized uniforms when they host Big East rival West Virginia Friday, Nov. 26, for the "Backyard Brawl." The game will be a noon national telecast on ABC.
The Panthers were among just 10 teams selected to wear the uniforms this season. The uniforms were specially customized for each university in order to reflect the teams' traditions, character and culture.
"The Nike Pro Combat System of Dress merges innovation and inspiration to deliver the lightest uniform in the industry," said Kris Aman, Global VP and GM of Nike Athletic Training, which includes football. "The designs incorporate cultural cues emblematic of each team's identity and heritage. They're more than uniforms, they're expressions of pride."
Pitt's all-time great offensive lineman Ruben Brown, who made nine Pro Bowl appearances during his accomplished NFL career, represented the Panthers in New York City to help deliver the uniform's unique story.
Pitt's design details include, according to Nike: "Notched Team Gold jersey numbers and stencil stripe on the helmet evoke steel I-beams in reference to Pittsburgh's steel industry."
Pitt and West Virginia will both appear in the Nike Pro Combat uniforms for the first time Friday at Heinz Field.
