PISCATAWAY, N.J.—Senior Andrzej Dubiel and sophomore Adam Maczewski were named Pitt Performers of the Meet, as the University of Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team placed fourth in the Frank Elm Super Splash Invitational, held on Rutgers’ campus, despite not competing in the finals on Sunday evening.
In the meet, Dubiel and Maczewski accounted for two individual first-place performances and three as members of relay teams during the weekend.
Not wasting time, Pitt swept the 100 back, as each Panther touched the wall under the previous 2005 meet record of 51.41. Maczewski won the event, setting the current standard at 47.89. Maczewski entered the weekend among the top 10 in the nation and as the fastest Big East swimmer in the 100 back.
Trailing Maczewski slightly, Dubiel and senior Bobby Smith rounded out the top three in the finals of the 100 back.
Later, in the prelims of the 200 back, Maczewski qualified for the finals as the top seed of the day with a swim of 1:52.16. Additionally, Smith placed fifth, while junior Christoph Berger placed 16th in the prelims.
Next, four Panthers qualified for the finals of the 100 free. Boasting the top time in the prelims, Dubiel recorded a season-best 45.73. Junior Jacob Van Roekel placed fourth in the morning swim, while freshman Alexander Rodenkirk and senior Alex Kubicek finished fifth and eighth, respectively.
In another sprint free, junior Morne Boshoff placed second overall in the 200 free. His time of 1:42.01 was an improvement from his prelim time of 1:43.44, which seeded him fifth in the finals. Boshoff recorded a season best for the Panthers in this event and was joined by Rodenkirk in the finals. Rodenkirk finished fifth overall.
Later in the day, Boshoff was also second in the 400 IM. His time of 4:00.82 was under the previous 2005 meet record of 4:02.08 and was nearly eight second faster that his prelim finish that morning. Junior Dawid Goszczycki placed sixth in the finals, while junior Benjamin Solari was seventh overall in the 400 IM.
Swimming the1650 free for the first time this season, sophomore Jared Kolwyck won his heat of the event. He placed fourth overall with a time of 16:25.37.
As the meet continued, junior Pierre-Antoine Meunier was just shy of eclipsing the previous meet record when he placed second in the finals of the 100 breast. He stopped the clock at 57.90, improving upon his third-seeded prelims finish of 58.85.
Swimming alongside Meunier was Solari and freshman Jonathan Du, who placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in the finals.
Later in the three-day meet, Meunier recorded the best prelim finish (2:07.94) in the 200 breast. Du and Solari also qualified for the finals in that event.
Another five Panthers advanced to the finals in the 100 fly. Earning the best finish for Pitt was senior Alex McLaren. McLaren recorded a third-place time of 51.16. Earlier in the day, he posted a season-best time of 50.94, which tied for third leading into the finals’ race.
In the consolation races: junior Rousseau Kluever was 11th overall, while sophomore Luis Rodriguez, Kubicek and freshman Sho Sugimoto placed in the top 24.
Hoping to sweep the finals, Kluever was the top seed after the prelims of the 200 fly. He recorded a meet record that morning with a season-best finish of 1:49.60. Next, McLaren finished with the second-best time of prelims when he touched the wall at 1:51.00. McLaren’s time was also under the previous meet record of 1:51.02 set in 2005.
Placing fourth in the 200 fly prelims was Rodriguez, who shaved nearly five seconds off his previous season best during the race.
In 1M diving, seniors Collin Forner and Zane McLain placed and third and fourth, respectively. Forner led the Panthers with 285.65 points. Additionally, freshman Aaron Snyder and senior Charles Hauser placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the finals.
Forner was also third on the 3M board. Snyder and McLain joined him in the finals of that event.
Setting another meet record, Pitt won the 200 medley relay at 1:31.93. The team consisted of Maczewski, Solari, McLaren and Dubiel. Their time was a season best, while skimming about two seconds off the 2005 meet record of 1:33.82.
Pitt, then, finished second in the 800 free relay. Boshoff, Rodenkirk, Dubiel and Rodriguez combined for a 6:50.90 finish.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 8, hosting West Virginia at Trees Pool in an 11 a.m. contest.
