PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh will honor our nation's military heroes during the Pitt vs. West Virginia game on Friday, Nov. 26 at noon at Heinz Field in the Backyard Brawl.
In partnership with Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Pitt has invited men and women of the United States armed forces who have been injured during conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan to be recognized during the game.
"There is no greater human sacrifice than to defend our great country," Pitt Athletic Director Steve Pederson said. "They honor us with their presence."
Those Wounded Warriors to be honored at the game include: Anthony Canzonieri of Greensburg, Pa.; Louis Freda of Exton, Pa.; Brian K. Coutch of New Kensington, Pa.; and Deacon Brant of Berlin, Pa.
Wounded Warrior Project's mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors. It serves to raise awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of injured service men and women, to help injured service members aid and assist each other and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs.
"For many WWP alumni, being honored at these games is the only public recognition they ever receive for their service to our country," said Steve Nardizzi, Executive Director of Wounded Warrior Project. "After injury, many wounded service members use athletic endeavors as part of their rehabilitation, and being invited to a game like this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for them."
Wounded Warrior Project Public Service Announcements will also be played throughout the game. For more information on WWP, please visit www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
