PITTSBURGH —The Pitt wrestling team will begin its season Saturday, Nov. 6 at the Knight Point Clarion Open. The Panthers will look to build off a strong performance last year, when nine wrestlers placed and two won their weight classes at the tournament.
"There will be some good talent we will face," Pitt Head Coach Rande Stottlemyer said. "Not a whole lot of schools send an entire team like we do, but there are over 320 competitors from some top programs."
Around twenty Pitt wrestlers will enter in the ten weight divisions.
Last season, Tyler Nauman and Ethan Headlee each claimed titles at the tournament. Nauman went 5-0 at 141-pounds, defeating teammate Dane Johnson in the final. Headlee recorded five straight wins including a 7-5 victory over Hadley Harrison (Clarion) in the final, to with at 174.
The tournament will give Stottlemyer and the Pitt coaching staff a good look at live competition before the team returns home Friday, Nov. 12 to start the dual meet season with a highly anticipated match up against Lehigh. The match will start at 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House.
"We have been waiting a while to compete," Stottlemyer added. "Our guys are excited to get the season going."
