LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Several Panthers earn season-best performances, as the University of Pittsburgh women’s swimming and diving team dropped its first dual meet of the 2010-11 season to Louisville, 190-109, at Ralph Wright Natatorium. The Panthers slipped to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in Big East action.
Freshman Julie Harrison set a season best in the 1,000 free when she earned a first-place performance, this afternoon. Harrison’s time of 10:10.51 was not only a season best for the Panthers, but also became the top time among Big East swimmers. She skimmed nearly eight seconds off her previous best of the season. Additionally, Harrison would later win the 500 free with a time of 5:00.02.
Freshman Lauren Matevish recorded a season best in the 1,000 free, as well, claiming the second-best time of the conference at 10.11.00.
In the first swimming event of the day, Pitt’s 400 medley relay team earned a first-place finish with a season-best performance of 3:52.49. The squad was made up of sophomore Joanna Budzis, freshman Veronica Lee, senior Caitlin Trant and junior Tamara Lelli.
From that opening relay, Trant won an individual event when she touched the wall at 56.75 in the 100 fly. Trant entered the weekend as the No. 1 swimmer in the 100 fly among the Big East. Her time today was slightly faster than her previous best of 56.76.
In the 200 fly, senior Cookie McIntyre recorded the fasted final 50 of the race (32.10), which was just enough to chase down and pass the Cardinal swimmer next to her. McIntyre took first with a season- and team-best 2:04.65. That time ranks among the top-five in the league.
Harrison, McIntyre and Trant were all named Pitt Performers of the Meet for their efforts.
The Panthers’ diving team will be in action next on Friday, Nov. 19, in the three-day Rutgers Diving Invitational.
