Six Pitt Wrestlers Earn Final Seeds at Midlands Championships

PITTSBURGH - Six members of the Pitt wrestling team were selected by the Midlands Championship committee as top-12 competitors in their respective weight classes. Junior Zac Thomusseit was awarded the coveted no. 1 overall ranking in the 197-pound class.
Ranked second in the country at heavyweight, redshirt senior Ryan Tomei garnered a two seed. Tomei will look at avenge his only defeat this season against current No. 1 Zac Rey of Lehigh. Earlier this season, Tomei fell 2-1 in overtime. Last season, Tomei placed seventh at the Midlands Championships.
Returning NCAA All-American Tyler Nauman received the three seed at 141 while sophomore Anthony Zanetta was seeded sixth in the 125 division.
Redshirt Junior Ethan Headlee and freshman Max Thomusseit each were selected as no. 11 seeds in 165 and 184, respectively.
Headlee is wrestling at 165 for the first time this season after dropping down from 174 while Thomusseit makes his debut at Midlands as one of only a handful of freshman to garner a seeding.
Junior Matt Wilps, who is redshirting the season, will be in competition as an unattached wrestler. Wilps received the no. 10 seed.

The competition begins Wednesday, Dec. 29 at 10:30 a.m. ET at Welsh-Ryan Arena on the campus of Northwestern University. The tournament continues on Thursday Dec. 30 at 1 p.m.
