Track and Field Set For Big East Championships

PITTSBURGH—Pitt’s men’s and women’s track and field teams are set to compete in the 2010 Big East Championships on Saturday, Feb. 20 and Sunday, Feb. 21 at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York, N.Y.
Returning to the Armory for the BEC are sophomores Antony Hobwana and Dontave Cowsette. Hobwana placed fifth at last year’s BEC in the 60 meters and has already notched a time this indoor season that beats his last year’s time of 6.90 in the finals. Cowsette turned in an impressive 1:50.68 in the 800 meters at the Penn State National Open just three weeks ago.
Also returning to the BEC for a consecutive year are senior pole vaulters Ron Walter and Nick Malenka. Fellow seniors Sam Perkins and Brandon Turner will also represent Pitt another year at the Championships. Juniors Maka Mudekunye and Garrett Larkin will make the trip to New York for competition as well. Sophomores Folarin Ijelu, Ben Hatch, Greg Kareis, Idris Kasumu, Elliot Rhodes, Jermaine Lowery, and Kevin Wilbank will also make the trip to New York to compete in their qualifying events.
Freshman Tashaun Hill will experience his first BEC meet this weekend. Hill led the men in the 60 meter hurdles at the Akron Invitational last weekend with a third place finish and a time of 8.06.
The women’s team will also be sending a number of athletes to compete. Senior Brianna Broyles will return to compete in the 60 meter hurdles along with freshman Brittany Carroll.
Seniors Kaetlyn Brown and Kari Hedderick will compete again this year, as well as juniors Jazmin Hunt, Wunmi Fapohunda, Sarah Anderson, Anita James and Da’Lynn Mills. Fapohunda will look to place in the triple jump again this year having claimed a top three finish in the event at last year’s BEC.
Sophomore BEC competitors include Miya Johnson and Cambrya Jones. Jones capture third last year in the 200 meters, while Johnson will look to place this year having clocked a solid time of 2:12.64 in the 800 meters. Freshmen Jonnique Lawrence, Rachel McIntosh and Ashley Woodford will compete at their first BEC meet this weekend.
The meet is scheduled to begin with the Women’s Pentathlon on Saturday at 8 a.m. Sunday’s events are set to kick off at 8 a.m. as well with the men’s heptathlon.
