Women's Track and Field Wins MSU Legacy Meet

BALTIMORE, Md.—Eight Panthers earned first-place finishes, while four met last year’s NCAA Regional qualifying standards, as Pitt’s women’s track and field team won the MSU Legacy Track Meet, held at Hughes Stadium, this weekend. The Panthers recorded 246 points among the 11-team field, while host Morgan State took second with 91 points.
Senior Brianna Broyles was a multi-event winner. She won the 400M hurdles with a season-best time of 1:00.47. Later in the day, Broyles improved upon her third-place prelim finish to win the 100M hurdles. She posted another season best with a time of 13.88 in that event. Both of Broyles time fell under the 2009 NCAA Regional qualifying standards.
Running alongside Broyles, freshmen Brittany Carroll and Elizabeth Kline placed fourth and seventh, respectively, in the finals of the 100M hurdles. Both qualified for the Big East Championships, while Kline earned a seed in the conference championships with a time of 1:03.43 in the 400M hurdles.
Another multi-event winner, sophomore Cambrya Jones won both the 100M and 200M dashes. In the 100M event, she was one of three to compete in the finals and qualify for the ECAC Championships. Jones recorded a season-best time of 11.67. Next, junior Da’Lynn Mills finished third at 11.74, while freshman Ashley Woodford was 12.09.
Jones and Mills each fell under the 2009 regional standard of 11.75.
Later, Jones led four to ECAC finishes and swept the 200M dash. Jones was first with a winning run of 23.97. Freshman Jonnique Lawrence was second at 24.49, while Mills and senior Kaetlyn Brown were third and fourth, respectively.
Brown would also place second with a Big East standard of 56.77 in the 400M dash.
Earlier in the meet, freshman Rachael McIntosh recorded a first-place finish in the heptathlon, meeting last year’s NCAA provisional score with 5,074 points. She took first in the high jump, javelin throw and 800M run during the heptathlon. McIntosh recorded a Big East standard of 1.71M in the high jump and placed in the top four in all the over the events.
Junior Kaitlyn Flynn was second in the high jump and javelin, and recorded 4,595 points in the heptathlon. Both McIntosh and Flynn qualified for the ECAC Championships with those scores.
Junior Sarah Anderson won the hammer throw with a distance of 51.67. Her mark was nearly seven meter further than second place and qualified her for the Big East and ECAC Championships.
Juniors Alexis Wilder and Kayla Comrie finished second and third, respectively in the hammer throw. Wilder was later second in the discus, as well.
Junior Kelsey Voltz won the javelin event, posting a throw of 36.52. Her mark was a Big East standard.
Earning the final first-place finish of the meet, junior Tory Toso won the pole vault event, while freshman Megan Leake placed second overall. Toso won this event at last year’s MSU Legacy Meet, as well.
Two Panthers qualified for the Big East Championships in the triple jump. First, junior Anita James placed second in the event with a leap of 12.02M. Then, classmate Wumni Fapohunda took third at 11.78M.
Later, Fapohunda also posted a conference meet standard in the long jump, earning a third-place performance of 5.60M.
In other top-three performances of the weekend, senior Kari Hedderick finished third in the 800M run.
The Panthers will travel to the Penn Relays on Thursday, April 22, for three days of competition in Philadelphia, and their final opportunity to qualify for the Big East Championships.
