McIntosh Earns All-Big East Honors

CINCINNATI, Ohio—Freshman Rachael McIntosh earned All-Big East honors, as the University of Pittsburgh women’s track and field team opened competition in the Big East Championships, held at Gettler Stadium.
McIntosh garnered a third-place performance in the heptathlon when she recorded 5,124 points. Her best performances of the event included two second-place performances in the javelin and 800M run.
In the sprints, sophomore Cambrya Jones won the top heat of the 200M dash with a personal- and season-best 23.63. A time that qualified for the 2009 NCAA regionals, Jones earned the No. 2 seed in tomorrow’s finals.
Junior Da’Lynn Mills will also race in the finals of the 200M dash, placing seventh in the prelims (23.98).
Recording season-bests, freshman Jonnique Lawrence recorded a 10th-place performance in the 200M dash with a time of 24.09, while senior Kaetlyn Brown was 13th at 24.34.
Earlier in the day, Mills and Jones advanced to the finals of the 100M, as well. Mills finished sixth in the prelims with a time 11.81, while Jones was seventh at 11.83.
In the 400M dash, Lawrence and Brown posted season-bests and qualified for the finals, with sixth and seventh-place finishes, respectively. Both performances qualified for the ECAC Championships.
Senior Brianna Broyles earned a fourth-place seed in the finals of the 100M hurdles, with a personal-best of 13.84. Her time improved her chances of qualifying for the NCAAs, as she crossed the finish line under the 2009 regional standard of 13.92.
Also qualifying for the finals, freshman Brittany Carroll turned in a seventh-place performance in the prelims of the 100M hurdles.
Freshman Elizabeth Kline and junior Jazmin Hunt placed in the top 15 of the 100M hurdles.
In the 400M hurdles, Broyles is seeded fifth in the finals after posting a finish of 1:00.05. Kline just missed the finials, placing ninth in the event with a season-best 1:01.79.
In other top-10 performances, junior Kaitlyn Flynn finished ninth overall in the heptathlon, while senior Erinn McMahon placed 10th. Later, junior Anita James finished ninth in the long jump, while classmate Wunmi Fapohunda was 12th overall.
Freshman Ashley Woodford turned in a top-20 performance in the 100M dash with a time of 12.10, while sophomore Miya Johnson placed in the top 25 of the 800M run.
In the javelin, juniors Kelsey Voltz and Leah Ulizio recorded season-best scores, while junior Alexis Wilder posted season bests in the shot put and discus.
Action resumes on Sunday, May 2, at 10 a.m. with the triple jump.
