PITTSBURGH - Pitt junior Ryan Tomei has earned a spot on the National Wrestling Coaches Association's All-Academic Team, adding to an outstanding athletic season in 2010.
Tomei (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) recorded a 3.21 grade point average in clinical dietetics and nutrition to earn a spot on the all-academic squad.
On the mat, Tomei quickly became one of the most feared heavyweights in the country, claiming the Eastern Wrestling League title at 285, and advancing to the NCAA Championship in his first year as a starter for the Panthers as the No. 8 seed.
In dual matches on the season, Tomei went 16-2 and helped lead Pitt to their first-ever regular-season EWL Championship. In addition, he recorded 13 falls on the year to lead Pitt and finished the season with a 33-7 overall record.
Recently Tomei took third at the University Freestyle Nationals and will attend the University World Team Trials in Colorado Springs at the end of May.
