Swimmers Return From Super Sectionals

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Several members of Pitt’s swimming team travelled north for the Super Sectionals, held at Erie Community College last week, returning with numerous personal bests and great experience.
Junior Jake Van Roekel recorded a personal best when he placed fifth in the 50 free at 24.42. He was also eighth in the 100 free with a time of 53.86.
Swimming alongside Van Roekel, incoming freshman Carl Svagerko placed 11th in the 50 free at 24.61. Svagerko would also earn a top-20 finish in the 100 fly (57.98) during the meet.
Senior Donald Mata swam under his 2009-10 season best in the 100 free, with a 54.54 finish.
On the women’s side, senior Laura Barnes posted an eighth-place performance in the 100 breast. She also matched her personal best in the 400 free with a time of 4:31.89, placing eighth overall.
Placing in the top-16 in two events, senior Kristen McMullan earned a seventh-place finish in the 50 freestyle (27.68) and took 15th in the 100 free (59.93).
Sophomore Kelsey Herbst turned in a personal best, touching the 800 free wall at 9:25.44. She recorded a top-20 finish with that time.
Recording three season bests, senior Katie Cutrell swam under her 2009-10 times in the 200, 800 and 1,500 free.
Sophomore Liz Tabor also captured season bests in the 200, 400, 800 and 1,500 free events, while senior Emily DeStefano posted season bests in the 50, 100 and 200 free races.
