Women's Swimming and Diving Falls 123-120 At Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Despite sweeping several events, the University of Pittsburgh women’s swimming and diving team dropped a 123-120 nail-biter to Buffalo Friday night.
The Panthers fought back after trailing by nearly 20 points early in the contest. Pitt swept the 200 back as freshman Tatyanna Sarjeant was first with a time of 2:04.88. Sophomore Renee Deschenes was second and freshman Kelsey Williams was third.
Junior Kelsey Herbst led three others in the 500 free with a finish of 5:02.24. Sophomores Lauren Matevish and Julie Harrison followed for second and third. Herbst was also second in the 200 free.
In the first individual race of the evening, Matevish and Harrison took first and second in the 1000 free with times of 10:23.56 and 10:26.19, respectively.
Pitt would also sweep the 1M board as junior Brittany DiSanti and sophomores Kimberly Ciotti and Leigh Waltz placed first through third, respectively. DiSanti claimed gold with 241.13 points.
Other first-place finishes included freshman Emily Bolek in the 200 fly (2:07.35) and sophomore Veronica Lee in the 200 breast (2:19.43). Lee was also third in the 200 fly (2:08.69).
The Panthers were edged out by a few hundredths of a second in the opening relay as Deschenes, freshman Cam Dixon, Lee and junior Joanna Budzis took second in the 400 medley relay at 3:53.86.
In the final event of the day, Budzis, Sarjeant, freshman Dani des Tombe and Herbst combined for a second-place finish of 3:32.31 as members of the 400 free relay team.
Pitt faces St. Bonaventure at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22.
