Track and Field Readies for the Raleigh Relays

PITTSBURGH- Returning to action this weekend, the Pitt track and field teams travel to Raleigh, N.C. for the Raleigh Relays. The two-day event begins on Friday, March 25 and concludes on Saturday, March 26.
Last year the Panthers opened up the outdoor season at the Duke Invitation in Durham, N.C. Junior Dontave Cowsette and senior Antony Hobwana placed in the top three, as four members of the track and field team qualified for the IC4A Championships. Earning the best finish of the day for the Panthers, Cowsette placed second in the 800M run, crossing the finish at 1:50.22. His time was one of the four IC4A standards achieved of the day.
Later, Hobwana qualified for the Big East meet with an 11th-place finish in the 200M dash (21.97).
On the women's side, the Panthers earned two first-place finishes, as several other members of the team qualified for the ECAC and Big East Championships. Senior Kaetlyn Brown won the 400M dash with a time of 55.99, qualifying for the Big East Championships with the finish.
In a team victory, Pitt's 4x100 relay team won its race with an ECAC finish of 46.41. Members of the winning relay consisted of sophomore Ashley Woodford, junior Cambrya Jones and seniors Da'Lynn Mills and Brianna Broyles.
This year the Panthers opened up their outdoor season at Charlotte, N.C. for the Charlotte 49ers Classic. In the competition, the women opened up with 15 top-eight performances and the men finished with 11 top-eight performances.
Senior Tory Toso won the pole vault with a jump of 3.50m, tying her with two other competitors for the stop spot.
Several athletes set career bests at the meet, including senior Anita James and sophomore Wesley Washington. James set a career best in the triple jump with a second place leap of 12.18m and also recorded an eighth place finish in the long jump. Washington had a standout performance for the men at the meet, setting a career best time of 1:52.86 to finish fourth overall in the 800M run.
Several other athletes made highlights during the competition, including freshmen Jessica Rocco and Sam Negley, and junior Ben Hatch. Rocco notched a third place finish in the javelin with a toss of 47.63m. In the 800M run, Negley finished in fifth place while Hatch crossed the finish line in ninth place.
Following the Raleigh Relays, the Panthers will travel to Williamsburg, Va. for the Colonial Relays on April 1.
