PITTSBURGH— Pitt junior pitcher Matt Iannazzo garnered BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week accolades for this past week, the league office announced Monday.
Iannazzo threw a complete game on Friday against West Virginia, whom the Panthers swept this weekend to clinch a BIG EAST tournament berth.
"Matt has been solid for us all year," said Head Coach Joe Jordano, "Each time he takes the mound, you know he's going to give a competitive effort."
In Friday's series-opener, Iannazzo allowed just six hits and one unearned run while walking two and striking out a career-high eight batters.
The Norwalk, Conn. native currently leads the Panthers in wins (6), complete games (4), shutouts (1), innings pitched (87.1) and strikeouts (54).
"When Matt has all his pitches working, he can beat anyone at any time," Jordano added. "It's a well-deserved and earned recognition."
The southpaw joins seniors Kevan Smith, Travis Whitmore and David Chester as players who have earned a BIG EAST weekly top honor.
Iannazzo and the Panthers travel to Youngstown State on Tuesday, May 17, before leaving for Tampa, Fla. for the final BIG EAST series of the season at USF. The series begins Thursday, May 19 at 7 p.m.
