No. 13 Panthers Head to 50th Midlands Championships

PITTSBURGH - The No. 13 Pitt wrestling team will send 12 wrestlers to the 50th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships. The event, which takes place on the campus of Northwestern University, will run Saturday, Dec. 29-Sunday, Dec. 30 at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Brackets for the event will be released the morning of the 29th.
Annually one of the most competitive in-season tournaments, this year's Midland's features more than 30 Division I teams, along with an assortment of national champions and finalists from Division II and III programs. Of the 32 Division I teams at this year's Midlands, 14 of them placed in the top-25 at the 2012 NCAA Championships. Additionally, 92 wrestlers who are ranked in the latest Amateur Wrestling News poll are scheduled to compete at the prestigious event.
The Panthers last traveled to Midlands in 2010 where they finished fifth in the team standings. Many current Pitt wrestlers had success in the event including: Matt Wilps who wrestling unattached captured the 197-pound bracket, Zac Thomusseit who finished third at 197 pounds, Anthony Zanetta who finished sixth at 125 and Donnie Tasser who took eighth at 157 pounds.

The finals of the 50th Midlands Championships will air live on Big Ten Network beginning at 8 p.m. EST on Sunday, Dec. 30.
