No. 16 Pitt Wrestling Hosts No. 17 Maryland

PITTSBURGH – Coming off a thrilling 18-16 victory over No. 11 Virginia Tech, the 16th-ranked Pitt wrestling team will return to Fitzgerald Field House to host its fourth ranked opponent in as many contests when it faces No. 17 Maryland on Friday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m.
The match between the Panthers and Terrapins will air live on Pitt Panthers TV with Pete Blais and former Panther letterwinner Shawn Amistade serving as the broadcast team.
The last time out, the Panthers earned a dramatic, 18-16, victory against No. 11 Virginia Tech. In the third overtime, with his squad trailing in the team score by a 16-12 mark, redshirt senior heavyweight Zac Thomusseit pinned David Marone to give the Panthers six team points and their first victory of the season. Shelton Mack, Nick Bonaccorsi, Max Thomusseit and Matt Wilps also picked up decisions for Pitt on the evening.
Maryland, which is coming off a 2-1 trip to Northeast Duals, enters the dual with a 4-1 record with the lone loss coming against No. 6 Illinois. The Terps’ roster features five wrestlers who are ranked in the latest Amateur Wrestling News poll. UM is coached by Kerry McCoy who is in his fifth season with the program.
Pitt, which also has a wrestler ranked at five weight classes by AWN, has 17-6 mark all-time against the Terrapins with the last meeting coming in 1984, a 32-9 UM victory.
