Panthers Begin Competition at Penn Relays in Impressive Fashion

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh men’s track and field team opened competition at the Penn Relays on a strong note during Friday’s events at Franklin Field.
Seniors Jermaine Lowery and Jerome Lowery turned in solid performances in the 400-meter hurdles, the very first event of the day. Jermaine Lowery crossed the finish line in second place (51.36), while Jerome Lowery turned in a top-20 performance in a competitive field (53.12).
Jermaine Lowery improved both his time and placement from last year’s relays, where he finished seventh at 51.66.
The Lowery’s were also members of the 1,600-meter relay team that finished seventh overall (3:10.73) at the meet. Sophomore Micah Murray and senior Dontave Cowsette rounded out the relay, which advanced to the Championship of America final on Saturday.
In another top-10 finish, freshman Joshua Thompson, sophomore Sam Negley and seniors Benjamin Hatch and Antony Hobwana finished ninth in the sprint medley with a time of 3:26.09, running in the Championships of America heat.
Individually, Thompson finished 11th in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal best 14.12.
In the field events, sophomore Reginald Steele IV finished eighth in the long jump with a leap of 6.85 meters.
Action resumes on Saturday at Franklin Field at 7:00 a.m. The meet will be broadcast on NBC from 1-3 p.m. ET.
