Thomusseit and Tasser Win Titles at Clarion Open

PITTSBURGH - Max Thomusseit (184) and P.J. Tasser (285) took home individual titles at the Clarion Open this past weekend. Additionally, six more Panthers found the podium as 25 members of the Pitt squad made their 2013-14 debuts.
Thomusseit earned his title at 184 pounds with early wins over Zach Diekel of Lehigh and Charlie Mason of Notre Dame College to set up matchups with a pair of top-15 ranked wrestlers. In the semifinal match, Thomusseit downed eighth-ranked Nathaniel Brown of Lehigh, 7-3, and bested No. 12 Kenny Courts of Ohio State in the finals by a 9-4 decision.
Tasser cruised through his first two matches, pinning Eloheim Palama of Campbell and nearly majoring Cody Mason of Lock Haven, 10-3. After outlasting Matthew Pringle of AIC 4-3 in the quarterfinals Tasser pinned Evan Daley of Clarion in a mere 1:32 to advance to the finals. In the championships match, Tasser earned a 3-1 decision over Max Wessell of Lehigh to take the heavyweight title.
Cody Wiercioch (165), Tyler Wilps (174) and Nick Bonaccorsi (197) each finished second in their respective weight classes while Ryan Solomon (197), Eric Nutter (157) and Shelton Mack (133) earned fourth place finishes.
Pitt will return to action when it opens its dual season when it hosts Lock Haven on Friday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m.
