PITTSBURGH – Navy took game one over Vegas, 8-2, to start the 2014 Navy/Vegas World Series at Charles L. Cost Field on Saturday, Oct. 18.
Game two of the Navy/Vegas World Series is on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. The third and final game will take place on Monday, Oct. 20 at 3 p.m.
Sophomore Matt Pidich got the win for Navy after pitching four innings. He gave up one earned run on two hits, while striking out two and walking. Freshman Zach Gakeler earned a three-inning save for Navy while allowing one run on four hits.
Sophomore T.J. Zeuch was credited with the loss after pitching 3.2 innings, surrendering five runs and seven hits to go with two strikeouts. After a shaky first inning, Zuech settled down and gave up just one run in the final 2.2 innings of work.
Four players on Navy recorded multi-game hits, led by senior Boo Vazquez, who went 3-for-4 on the night with two doubles and two runs batted in. Freshman Charles LeBlanc had two hits and two RBIs, while redshirt sophomore Jacob Wright and senior Eric Hess tallied two hits and an RBI each.
Wright led off the contest singling up the middle as the first of four consecutive batters to reach base safely in the top of the first inning. After junior Ron Sherman walked, Hess singled through the left side to score Wright and give Navy an early 1-0 lead. Vazquez then roped a double into right-center field, recording two RBI and adding two runs to the Navy lead, 3-0. Two batters later, redshirt freshman Frank Maldonado’s sac bunt brought in Vazquez to complete the four-run first inning.
Pidich retired the first four batters in the game before senior Jordan Frabasilio doubled to right-center field in the bottom of the second inning. After a walk, junior Rich Condeelis doubled to right-center to score Frabasilio and cut Navy’s lead to 4-1.
After a silent third inning, Leblanc led off the top of the fourth with a single to right field. On a wild pitch from Zeuch, Leblanc advanced to second base, and with two outs Wright doubled to center and Leblanc scored to widen Navy’s advantage over Vegas to 5-1.
In the top of the fifth, Navy added two runs to make it 7-1. The leadoff batter, Hess, was hit by a pitch and Vazquez followed with a double down the left field line to put a pair of runners in scoring position. With one away in the inning, Leblanc singled up the middle driving in both runners.
Vegas struck back in the bottom of the fifth for one run. Back-to-back singles by freshman Jawan McAllister and sophomore Caleb Parry put two on with no one out. Both McAllister and Parry advanced into scoring position after a passed ball and McAllister came home on a groundout by sophomore Nick Yarnall, who was then credited with an RBI.
Navy completed the scoring with a final run in the seventh. Frank Maldonado advanced all the way to second when sophomore P.J. DeMeo made a fielding and throwing error to begin the inning. Three batters later, senior Matt Johnson put Navy up 8-2 with a sacrifice fly to right field.
