PITTSBURGH – Vegas scored four runs in the fourth inning to grab the lead for good in game two and evened up the World Series with a 6-5 win on Sunday, Oct. 19 at Charles L. Cost Field. The decisive third game will take place on Monday, Oct. 20 at 3 p.m.
Sophomore Nick Yarnall recorded two of Vegas’ five hits, including the go-ahead, two-run single in the fourth. Freshman Jawan McAllister, sophomore Caleb Parry and senior Jordan Frabasilio all collected one hit and one run batted in each.
For Navy, senior Boo Vazquez, junior Alex Kowalczyk and redshirt sophomore Jacob Wright all posted multi-hit games. Vazquez drove in two and once while Wright scored twice, stole two bases and knocked in a run. In two World Series games, Vazquez and Wright have two multi-hit games, with Vazquez leading all players with a five hits, a .714 batting average, three doubles and four RBIs.
Freshman Isaac Mattson took the win for Vegas, pitching four innings in relief, allowing one run on two hits while striking out four. He entered in the fourth inning in place of starter, junior Aaron Sandefur, who gave up four runs on six hits.
Sophomore Sam Merisng was handed the loss after yielding five runs on just two hits in 3.1 innings. Senior Hobie Harris came on in relief and was credited with just one unearned run and three hits. He retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced.
Vegas started things off in the first with two outs and nobody on when Yarnell drew a walk. He stole second and continued to third on an errant throw by the catcher Kowalczyk. A ball off the bat by senior Jordan Frabasilio went to junior Ron Sherman at third base. He bobbled the hit, allowing Yarnell to score and give Vegas its first lead in the World Series at 1-0.
Navy responded in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game. Wright made his way around the bases after leading off with a single through the left side. He moved up to second on a sac bunt and went to third on a fly. Continuing his strong performance in the World Series thus far, Vazquez smacked an infield single, plating Wright and evening the score.
The teams combined for nine runs over the next two innings, with Vegas outscoring Navy 5-4 in what ultimately decided the outcome of the one-run ballgame.
In the top of the third, Vegas took the lead back on Frabasilio’s single up the middle. McAllister started things off by collecting Vegas’ first hit of the night. On the first pitch to Frabasilio, McAllister stole second. Later in the at bat, Frabasilio roped a liner back up the middle making the score 2-1 in favor of Vegas.
With three runs in the bottom of the inning, Navy went ahead for the first time in the game at 4-2. Wright bunted his way onto base then stole a pair to get all the way over to third. After senior Eric Hess was hit by a pitch, Vazquez doubled over the head of the right fielder to plate Wright and put two in scoring position. Kowalczyk followed with an RBI single to right and freshman Charles LeBlanc hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Vazquez.
Not to be outdone, Vegas put up four runs in the next half inning to jump back on top by a score of 6-4. After the first batter was retired, the next six Vegas players reached base, starting with a hit by pitch and two walks. With the bases loaded, McAllister hit a grounder that wasn’t fielded cleanly, allowing sophomore P.J. DeMeo to score. Parry tied the game momentarily at 4-4 with his single to left before Yarnell laced a two-run single through the right side to put Vegas in front for good at 6-4.
Looking to make a comeback, Navy pushed a run across in the bottom of the fourth when senior Matt Johnson tripled to center and scored on Wright’s RBI groundout. However, Navy couldn’t get anything else after that as Mattson retired 10 of the final 12 batters he faced, including picking off the only base runner in the last two innings after allowing a single.
