PITTSBURGH - After picking up two ACC wins this past weekend, the University of Pittsburgh volleyball team (23-6, 11-5 ACC)will play its final two matches of the season this week against Louisville (15-14, 7-10 ACC) and Notre Dame (6-22, 3-14 ACC), fighting to keep its NCAA Tournament hopes alive.
The Panthers will first travel to Kentucky to take on the Cardinals at Cardinal Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 26 with match-up being broadcast live on ESPN3. They will then continue on to Indiana to go head-to-head with Fighting Irish at Purcell Pavilion on Friday, Nov. 28. Both matches are slated to begin at 4 p.m.
Pitt is currently on the bubble when it comes to making the 2014 NCAA Division I Volleyball Tournament, as they sit at No. 51 in the latest NCAA RPI. However, two wins this week could potentially push them into the top 50, which will give the Panthers a better chance to receive an at large bid.
Pitt enters this week of play very familiar with both Louisville and Notre Dame. The Panthers have already competed against both teams this year, having dropped Notre Dame (3-0) in its third ACC match of the season before knocking off Louisville (3-1) at the end of October.
Louisville enters its second match-up against the Panthers on a three game losing streak, which includes falling victim to Wake Forest, Duke and previously No. 7 North Carolina. The Cardinals are now 15-14 on the season and 7-10 in conference play. Sophomore outside hitter Maya McClendon notched double-digit kills (15) in the loss to UNC and is Louisville's leader in kills (341) and kills per set (3.13).
Notre Dame enters Friday's match-up with an overall record of 6-22 and an ACC record of 3-14. The Fighting Irish are also on a losing streak, suffering losses to Wake Forest, Duke, North Carolina and NC State the past two weekends. Statistically, senior Jeni Houser leads Notre Dame with 281 kills and 2.65 kills per set.
