Pitt Races Six Nationally Ranked Teams At Harry Groves

PITTSBURGH - Coming off a weekend sweep winning all four races, the Pitt cross country teams will try to duplicate its success on Saturday, Sept. 13 with a total of three more races on the docket. Twenty-two members of both teams will travel to University Park, Pa. for the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational while 16 more women will participate in the Father Bede Invitational in Loretto, Pa.
LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend Pitt sent both men's and women's squads to Buffalo for the UB Stampede Invite and to Greensburg, Pa. for the SHU Griffin Classic. All four rosters came away with wins, completing a perfect day for the Panthers.
Senior Cullen Davis led the men's team in Buffalo, grabbing the individual title on the 8K course. Junior Michael Runco was next in line at fourth for the Panthers, who placed their first five runners all in the top-10 and finished with a team score of 24 points. On the women's side, Pitt sent the second through sixth runners across the finish for a first place finish of 20 points. Sophomore Dee Dee Adams and junior Hillary Boxheimer were separated by 0.5 seconds with Adams edging out Boxheimer for second.
Over at Seton Hill, the men took the top five spots with freshman Matt Kazanjian grabbing first place. Sophomore Joslin Sellers was the first Pitt runner to complete the 5K course at SHU, coming in third for the first-place Panthers.
DAVIS, SHENCK HONORED FOR PERFORMANCES
Following their strong showings on Saturday in Buffalo, Davis and freshman Beth Shenck were honored by the Atlantic Coast Conference and Eastern College Athletic Conference, respectively. Davis was named the ACC's male cross country Co-Performer of the Week after he completed the 8K in 25:05.7 and took first place. The ECAC recognized Shenck as its Co-Rookie of the Week. She posted a time of 18:31.4 for a fourth place, 5K finish in her first collegiate race.
SIZING UP THE FIELD
Pitt will be one of 13 teams competing at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational. Along with Pitt, ACC rival Syracuse and former BIG EAST foes Georgetown and West Virginia will also be participating. Penn State is the host of the event.
All four teams are ranked in the USTFCCCA's top-30 in the women's field with Georgetown coming in at No. 5, followed by Syracuse (13), West Virginia (20) and Penn State (29). Additionally, SUNY Geneseo is the No. 10 team from Division III. The 6K race begins at 10 a.m.
The men's side features a pair of ranked squads in No. 8 Syracuse and No. 29 Georgetown. SUNY Geneseo is the No. 13 in Division III and is joined by No. 19 SUNY Cortland, also from Division III. The gun goes off at 10:45 for the 5.2-mile run.
LAST YEAR AT HARRY GROVES
With only four teams on the men's side and five in the women's pack in 2013, Pitt was able to place third in both events. Davis was the top men's finisher from Pitt with a sixth-place effort in 26:37. Adams was the top Panthers competitor in the women's group, placing 14th in 22:12.

The Panthers shorten their roster next weekend when it sends just one men and one women's team out for the St. Vincent Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 20.
