Volleyball Sweeps Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team swept Boston College, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Power Gym to move to 14-4 on the season and 4-2 in ACC play.
Every set was close as the Panthers defeated the Eagles (9-9, 1-5 ACC) 25-21, 25-23 and 25-22.
Sophomore Mariah Bell put on a show for Pitt, recording her fourth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 11 digs. She finished the match with a .524 hitting percentage.
In addition to Bell, senior Amanda Orchard and graduate student Kadi Kullerkann both added double-digit kills. Orchard put up 10 while Kullerkann added 13. The Estonian now has registered 16 matches with 10 or more kills, including eight consecutive.
Redshirt freshman Angela Seman tied Bell with a team-leading 11 digs, while Kullerkann added eight blocks.
The Panthers started out strong in the first set, taking down the Eagles, 25-21. Pitt began the first set with three straight points, thanks to two attack errors by Boston College and a kill by junior Maria Genitsaridi. The Eagles were unable keep up with the Panthers in the beginning and called a timeout after Pitt took an 8-2 lead. Boston College worked its way back within four but another run by the Panthers gave Pitt an eight point lead midway through the set. The Panthers lead didn’t stop the Eagles as they fought back within a point after outscoring Pitt, 13-6. Leading 21-20, the Panthers scored three straight to earn set point. Boston College stopped Pitt on its first attempt but the Panthers finished it off with a kill from Kullerkann.
Pitt got out to a hefty lead once again, this time 9-3 in the second set. The Panthers forced the Eagles into to break, but it didn’t do much as Pitt maintained a seven point lead midway through the set. Boston College didn’t go down without another fight as the squad forced the Panthers into almost back-to-back timeouts after pulling back within two, 23-21. Out of Pitt’s second timeout, the Eagles’ Devon Michaelis aced and Boston College trailed by a single point. The Panthers were able to hold on as Genitsaridi and sophomore Kelsey O’Neill both put kills away to end it.
For the third straight set, Pitt started out with a large lead over Boston College, this time shutting out the Eagles 5-0 to begin the set. However, Boston College outscored Pitt, 6-2, to tie the game at 7-7. The Eagles earned its first lead of the game and took an 11-9 lead, but it was short-lived as Pitt returned to the court from a timeout on fire to outscore Boston College 8-3 to take a 17-14 lead. The two teams remained close through the remainder of the set, all the way through the final points. The Eagles pulled within two of the Panthers but a Boston College service error ended the match.

The Panthers will return home to welcome Georgia Tech on Oct. 16 (7 p.m.) and Clemson on Oct. 18 (1 p.m.). Fans will be able to view both games live on ESPN3.
