
Women's Cross Country Wins CMU Invitational

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh women’s cross country team won the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on Saturday morning at Schenley Park.
“Our women’s team was totally dominant today,” head coach Alonzo Webb said. “They continue to run as a pack and develop the closeness needed to be successful in championship competition in the coming weeks.”
The Panthers had six athletes finish inside the top 10, led by Beth Shenck who placed third overall in a time of 18:36.0. Just fourth tenths of a second behind her was Dee Dee Adams in fourth place (18:36.4).
Amy Kelly was the team’s third runner to cross the line and the sixth overall in 18:45.7, while Karli O’Neill was seventh in 18:53.2.
Rounding out the top 10 finishers were Miranda Salvo in ninth place (18:55.9), and Madeline Schmiedeknecht in tenth (18:57.9).
Not only did the Panthers have six in the first 10, the Panthers placed 10 runners inside the top 20. Pitt athletes who also performed well were Samantha Owens (12th – 19:01.4), Ellen Crook (14th – 19:04.0), MaKenzie Zeh (16th – 19:10.3) and Caroline DeFrank (19th – 19:14.4).
On the men’s side, the Panthers only fielded four runners, led by Ethan Linderman who placed 10th overall in a time of 26:20.8.
“Although we didn’t field a full squad on the men’s side today, I was happy with their performance,” Webb said. “They competed with toughness and are steadily moving forward.”
Nate Sloan took 16th place in a time of 26.32.9, while Alex Archer was 29th (26:53.6) and Josh Trzeciak was 44th (27:14.5).
The Panthers now turn their attention to the Princeton Invitational next weekend. Pitt will get familiar with the course on Saturday in preparation for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional which Princeton will also host in mid-November.
