PITTSBURGH – The second day of action in the Navy-Vegas World Series wrapped up with Navy taking a 2-0 edge in Wednesday’s game at Charles L. Cost Field, boosting their lead in the competition to 10-6.
More importantly, today’s game was an improvement over yesterday in nearly every phase of play.
“Today the pitchers were working very quickly, getting after it, and playing aggressive,” said head coach Joe Jordano. “The one thing that I really like is the fact that we went from playing a sloppy game to a really good, crisp game today.”
Freshmen Corey Augenstein and Tyler Garbee made the starts for Navy and Vegas, respectively. Augenstein was the most effective hurler on the day, recording three innings of one-hit ball, allowing only one walk and striking out one. His replacement, freshman Dylan Cyphert, fired two scoreless frames to round out the day for Navy on the mound.
“We need everybody that wears the uniform to compete for us. We had a couple more [freshmen] out there and they did a really solid job. I feel really good about the effectiveness of our pitchers today.”
Senior Alex Kowalczyk struck first for Navy with an RBI single to left in the first inning. Sophomore Charles LeBlanc was the man across the plate after coming aboard on a base hit to center.
Navy added to its lead in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from redshirt sophomore Frank Maldonado. Kowalczyk doubled ahead of him for his second hit in as many trips and took third on a sac bunt laid down by senior Ron Sherman.
Vegas’ best scoring chance was cut down in the fifth inning when freshman Yaya Chentouf attempted to score from second on a base hit to left by junior Manny Pazos. Redshirt junior Jacob Wright loaded up and launched a strike to home, where Chentouf was tagged out to end the frame.
Tomorrow’s finale is slated for 3 p.m. back at Cost Field.
