PITTSBURGH - The Pitt wrestling team held its Blue vs. Gold intrasquad scrimmage Friday night at the Fitzgerald Field House. The Blue team came out on top after 15 bouts, 33-28.

The lineup was highlighted by veterans and first-timers, as the team prepares to officially open the regular season next weekend.

The Gold team jumped to an early 9-3 lead after freshman Cam Jacobson earned a 6-4 decision over junior Alexander Kail (174). That match was followed by the first pin of the night from redshirt sophomore Cody Wiercoich in 3:59 over freshman Brady Mason at 165.

Back-to-back falls from the Blue squad put them ahead 18-9 thanks to redshirt senior Ronnie Garbinsky who earned his in 5:51 over freshman Nathan Hall in the 157 weight class. Sophomore Zach Bruce (184) then quickly pinned freshman Jacob Parker (197) in :58.

Freshman Robert Lee of the Gold team started to close the gap of the Blue squad as he defeated fellow freshman Taleb Rahmani with a 4-1 decision at 149. That was followed by another impressive Gold performance from freshman LJ Bentley, who earned a 14-3 major decision over sophomore Ben Ross at 125, cutting the Blue lead to 21-19.

The Gold team would hold on to its lead for the next three matches as freshman Dominic Vitale won in a 10-2 major decision, junior Dom Forys earned a 22-7 technical fall, and redshirt senior Nick Bonaccorsi won in a 10-3 decision.

With the score at Gold 28, Blue 24, the final two matches featured 174 and 285 weight classes. Jacobson pinned freshman Donovan McAfee in 2:32, bringing the lead back to the Blue side. In the final match of the night, junior John Rizzo earned a 5-1 decision to secure the Blue squad victory, 33-28.

The Panthers open the 2015-16 season on the road Sunday, Nov. 1, in College Park, Md., at the team will participate in the Terrapin Duals.
