PITTSBURGH – The Pitt men’s soccer team (5-4-2) played to a double overtime 1-1 draw with Niagara (1-8-2) Tuesday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
“It was a tough game,” head coach Joe Luxbacher said. “We were flat by my estimation. I don’t know why. I thought we were ready for the game in terms of preparedness, but we just seemed to be a step slow. We weren’t sharp and I don’t know the answer why.”
The Panthers outshot the Purple Eagles 18-13, seven of which were on goal. Senior goalkeeper Dan Lynd made three saves, while Niagara’s Colin Hanley recorded six.
Pitt took the first lead of the night in the 47th minute thanks to a header from junior midfielder Kevin Murray. Senior midfielder Patrick Dixon sent the ball in to the box off of a corner kick that found Murray who headed the ball over Hanley.
The Purple Eagles struck in the 83rd minute as Bautista Pedezert headed the ball over Lynd after receiving the ball from a free kick on the left side of the box.
The Panthers attempted three shots during the two overtime periods, but were unable to score any more goals.
“We’re turning the page,” Luxbacher said. “Niagara is not a bad team. I just thought we would be sharper and better tonight.”
Pitt returns to Ambrose Urbanic Field and ACC action on Friday, Oct. 9, as the Panthers host the Virginia Tech Hokies for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
