Panthers in the Pros: Season Wrap-Up

PITTSBURGH - Pitt baseball is represented by its alumni at many levels of the professional ranks. With the MLB Postseason underway and Minor League Baseball finished for the year, let's take a moment to review the seasons turned in by former Panthers.
Corey Baker (Springfield Cardinals - Double-A | Texas League): Opening the year with Double-A Springfield after a late promotion to close 2014, Baker made a total of 38 appearances, including 11 starts. Baker recorded 88 strikeouts in just 97.0 innings this season, giving him a career high K/9 of 0.91. On August 31, he threw the 7th complete game shutout in Springfield Cardinals history.

Raymond Black (San Jose Giants - High-A | California League): Black opened the season in High-A after a stint in Class A to end last year. He battled injuries twice throughout the season, but still managed to put together another impressive year. Black finished the season with an incredible K/9 of 2.04. His stellar pitching helped the Giants reach the California League Finals, but they were defeated by the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.

Marc Berube (AZL Athletics - Rookie | Arizona League): Berube began his professional career with the AZL Athletics, an affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. He threw exceptionally well in the first half of the season, only giving up one earned run in his first five appearances.

David Chester : (Portland Sea Dogs - Double-A | Eastern League): Chester played in 67 games this season for Portland. He finished the year with seven home runs, which was good for fourth on the Sea Dogs.

Rich Condeelis (GCL Twins - Rookie | Gulf Coast League): Condeelis began his first professional baseball season with the GCL Twins, a Minnesota affiliate. He finished the season with a 1-3 record in 12 appearances. Condeelis recorded 20 strikeouts in just 15.1 innings pitches, which gave him an impressive K/9 of 1.32.

Luke Curtis (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers - Class A | Midwest League): Curtis put together an amazing year for Wisconsin this season, leading the Timber Rattlers in a number of statistical categories. He led his team in wins (8), appearances (40), and saves (7). Curtis' eight wins were the most in the Midwest League for all pitchers without a single start.

Adam Dian (Hickory Crawdads - Class A | South Atlantic League): Dian began the season in Rookie ball with the AZL Rangers, but was eventually promoted to the Rangers Class A organization, the Hickory Crawdads. He finished the year with a combined ERA of 2.54, nearly three runs lower than last season's ERA of 5.40. The Crawdads won the SAL championship in a three-game sweep of the defending champion Ashville Tourists.

Hobie Harris (Charleston RiverDogs - Class A | South Atlantic League): Harris spent time with four different clubs in the Yankees organization in his first professional season. He spent the majority of his time with the GCL Yankees1, where his 2.12 ERA was the lowest on the team among pitchers who threw at least 15.0 innings. Harris joined former Panthers teammates Joe Harvey and Matt Wortherspoon with the Charleston RiverDogs to finish the season.

Joe Harvey (Charleston River Dogs - Class A | South Atlantic League): Harvey converted all eight save situations he faced this season for Single-A Charleston.Harvey's last appearance was on May 27th.

Matt Iannazzo (Bridgeport Bluefish - Independent | Atlantic League): As a member of the Bluefish, an independent club in the Atlantic League, Iannazzo finished the season with a record of 5-12. His 122.0 innings pitched were the most for the Bluefish this year.

Ethan Mildren (Fort Myers Miracle - High-A | Florida State League): Mildren split time between Fort Myers and Cedar Rapids this season. His combined ERA of 3.86 was the lowest he's posted in any form of Class A ball. He last pitched on Sept. 2 due to an injury that left him on the Disabled List to finish the season.

Nate Reed (Lancaster Barnstormers - Independent | Atlantic League): Reed spent this season with the Lancaster Barnstormers, a member of the independent Atlantic League. He finished the year with 109.0 innings pitched and 110 strikeouts, good for third and first respectively for Lancaster. Reed helped the Barnstormers reach the Atlantic League playoffs, but fell in the divisional round to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.

John Schultz (Evansville Otters - Independent | Frontier League): In his third year for Evansville, Schultz posted career highs in nearly every offensive category. He led the Otters in runs (66), hits (118), doubles (28), triples (3), RBIs (52), OBP (.407), OPS (.963), and SLG (.556). Schultz was recognized for his incredible season by making the Frontier League All-Star team for the second time in three years.

Kevan Smith (Charlotte Knights - Triple-A | International League): Smith made his Triple-A debut in 2015 with the Chicago White Sox' Charlotte affiliate this season. In his 90 starts behind the plate, Smith finished with an impressive fielding percentage of .990. At the plate, Smith ended the year with a batting average of .260. His best performance of the season came on July 11, when he went 4-4 with four RBIs in a 10-2 victory over the Norfolk Tides.

Elvin Soto (Kane County Cougars - Class A | Midwest League): Soto started 26 games at catcher for the cougars this season. He also appeared twice at first base and even pitched an inning. The Cougars finished the regular season with the best record in the Midwest League at 48-22. However, they were eliminated in the early rounds of the playoffs.

Matt Wotherspoon (Charleston RiverDogs - Class A | South Atlantic League): Wotherspoon spent time with the Trenton Thunder, Tampa Yankess, and Charlestown RiverDogs this season. Spending most of the year in Charlestown with former Panthers teammates Joe Harvey and Hobie Harris, he finished the season with a record of 5-4 and a combined ERA of .405 between the three clubs. His 97 strikeouts for Charlestown were tied for third on the RiverDogs.
