
Pitt Completes Weekend Sweep with Win Over Miami

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team remains undefeated at the Fitzgerald Field House (11-0) after sweeping Miami Sunday afternoon to improve to 19-5 overall and 9-3 in ACC play.
The Panthers and Hurricanes [15-7, 8-4 ACC] played three close sets but Pitt came out on top 25-23, 25-20 and 25-22.
The Panther's top offensive leaders, graduate student Kadi Kullerkann and senior Amanda Orchard, both posted hitting percentages of above .450 in the match. Kullerkann hit .458 with a team-leading 13 kills, while Orchard racked up a .462 average and added seven kills. Sophomore Mariah Bell added 11 kills to the attack.
Senior Jenna Jacobson continues to lead the team in assists, racking up 20 against Miami.
Defensively, Pitt tallied a total of 40 digs, including ten from redshirt freshman Angela Seman.
The Panthers opened the match with a first set, 25-23, win over the Hurricanes. Pitt and Miami went back-and-forth at the start, but the Panthers gained the first big lead after a five-point run that brought the score to 14-9. Following a Hurricanes timeout, Miami fought back within two of the Panthers, forcing head coach Dan Fisher to call his first timeout. The two teams battled closely through the remainder of the set but Bell rallied off two final kills for the win.
Pitt increased its lead to 2-0 after a 25-20 win in the second set. The Panthers dominated in the opening points, taking a six point lead right off the bat. The Hurricanes committed four errors to aid in Pitt's opening success, which brought on a timeout call by Miami. The Panthers extended their lead to 18-9 and was able to hold on for the win as Miami was only able to fight back within four.
Pitt finished off the Hurricanes in the third set with a 25-22 victory. The Panthers pulled out to a 7-4 lead to begin the set but was outscored 4-1 by Miami to bring forth an early Pitt timeout. The Hurricanes continued to fight and earned their first lead of the match at 14-13. Miami's slight advantage didn't last long as the Panthers answered with four points in a row to regain the lead, 17-14. Kullerkann solidified the win for Pitt, firing off back-to-back kills to end the match.
Up Next
Pitt will spend its next two weekends on the road, heading first to Louisville and Notre Dame. The Panthers will take on the Cards on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. and will conclude the weekend against the Fighting Irish on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m.
