PRINCETON, N.J. – The University of Pittsburgh women's cross country team earned its highest finish in program history at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Friday afternoon, racing to a seventh place team finish.
"The women followed up on a strong performance at the ACC Championship Meet with an even more impressive finish at the NCAA Regional Meet," head coach Alonzo Webb said. "This was the best finish by a Pitt women's team ever and I am excited for the cross country season next year because they are motivated to get into the conversation for a berth into the National Championship Meet."
The Panthers entered the meet ranked seventh in the region and proved why. All of Pitt's scorers placed 52nd or better, led by freshman Gillian Schriever in 30th place.
Schriever missed All-Region honors by just five people and capped off her fantastic freshman campaign by running a 6K time of 21:51.
Four seconds and four places behind her was senior Hillary Boxheimer who ran a time of 21:55.4.
"For me personally, watching Hillary complete her cross country career today was special," women's coach Adam Bray said. "She has been an outstanding student athlete and I am honored that I had the privilege to work with her."
Sophomore Melanie Vlasic was Pitt's third finisher and placed 39th overall in a time of 22:03.6. Ariel Pastore-Sebring (48th – 22:09.9) and Dee Dee Adams (52nd – 22:12.9) rounded out the Pitt scoring.
"Today was a culmination of all the hard work the women's team put in this fall," Bray said. "We finished seventh which is the best finish in program history. I thought all our women competed great today and I am very proud of our performance. I am excited to see how far we can take this momentum as we transition to the track season."
The men's team placed 14th overall out of 28 teams and was led by junior Chris Montgomery on the 10K course.
Montgomery finished 43rd overall in a time of 31:49.7. Ryan Hughes was Pitt's second finisher in 63rd place (32:24.1), while Aaron Lauer crossed the line in 75th (32:38.5).
Billy Caldwell (76th – 32:41.5) and Sebastian Curtin (109th – 33:25.5) were the final two Pitt runners who scored for the Panthers.
"I am proud of how our men have handled this season and overcome adversity along the way," men's coach Bryan Jackson said. "I am excited for the future as we are a young, talented and hungry team.
The Panthers now turn their attention to the indoor track season which starts on December 5 with the Blue-Gold Meet.
