PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh vlley team remains undefeated at the Fitzgerald Field House with a 12-0 record after sweeping Boston College for the second time this season, Friday evening.
The Panthers [22-7, 12-5 ACC] took down the Eagles [11-18, 3-14 ACC] by set scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-23, respectively.
Graduate transfer Kadi Kullerkann and sophomore Mariah Bell led Pitt in kills with 13 apiece, while senior Amanda Orchard posted a .600 hitting percentage [9-0-15]. Kullerkann's double-digit hitting streak remains alive after tonight, now with 19 in a row and 27 total this season.
Defensively, Orchard added a team-high five blocks while Angela Seman put up 21 digs.
Pitt got off to a quick start in the first set, taking a 12-4 lead following a six point run. The Eagles didn't go down easily, as they outscored the Panthers, 7-4 in the later points of the set, to pull back within four. Pitt was able to hold on as Kullerkann set a ball down the line for a kill to give the Panthers a 25-20 first set win.
Pitt, who was led by Bell with six kills in set two, went on to take a 2-0 lead following a 25-21 victory. The Panthers led in the opening points of the set, but Boston College came back to tie the set twice to stay within reach of Pitt. Following the second tie score, the Panthers called a timeout to slow the Eagles momentum, which worked as Pitt scored three-straight out of the break. The Panthers went on to win the set, however Boston College didn't make it easy as they fought off three set points.
Pitt finished off the match with a 25-23 win, while posting 16 kills in the set. The Panthers and Eagles were neck and neck through most of the set, until Pitt was able to take a 19-16 lead. The advantage prompted a BC timeout, which slowed the Panthers as the Eagles came back to tie the score 23-23. A solo block by redshirt junior Jenna Potts gave Pitt match point, which was then followed up with an attack error by Boston College to give the Panthers the win.
