Gymnastics Falls to UNC, 194.700-194.450

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team led North Carolina, 146.375-145.975, following the third rotation, but the Panthers could not hold onto its lead as the Tar Heels outscored the Panthers, 48.725-48.025, in the final rotation to give UNC the win by a score of 194.700-194.450 Saturday afternoon at Carmichael Arena.
"We had a chance going into the last event," said head coach Debbie Yohman. "We just couldn't hang onto it on beam. Moving forward we have a group of kids that are still fighting. If we continue to fight, we're going put it altogether in one of the last two meets or both and end up on top."
Lindsay Offutt led the PanLindsay Offutt led the Panthers, who fought until the end, picking up two first place finishes on beam and in the all-around. In only her fourth four event attempt all season, Offutt crushed the all-around for the first time this year with a career high 39.225, outscoring three UNC gymnasts. The junior scored three 9.85's and a 9.675 on a vault that is still being refined. She tied on beam with Janell Sargent of UNC with a career high score of 9.850.
Vault consisted of a three way tie for first with Maebelle Pacheco and Tracey Pearson taking two spots in addition to Morgan Lane of the Tar Heels. Each girl in the trio scored a 9.775.
The Panthers began the afternoon on bars while the Tar Heels began on vault. Pitt outscored UNC 48.975-48.150 and placed two in the top four overall while UNC posted four in the top six. Taylor Laymon and Offutt both notched a 9.850, tying them for second place overall. The score was a career high for Offutt and it tied Laymons career high. Miya Dotson followed closely behind with a 9.800 and Lisa Soto picked up a season high 9.775. Dani Hall and Tiara Chadran rounded out the scores with a 9.700 and 8.975 respectively.
Following the second rotation with Pitt on vault and the Tar Heels on bars, the Panthers continued to hold a 97.650-97.250 lead over North Carolina. Pitt posted a first place score of 9.775 on vault, which was scored by both Pearson and Pacheco. Erika Reichert and Dotson both put up a score of 9.725, tying them for fourth place. Soto received a score of 9.650 while Offutt added a 9.675. The Panthers placed five Pitt gymnasts in the top six while UNC only had four in the top ten.
The Panthers scored 48.700 on floor in their third rotation to help them hold on to a 146.375-145.975 lead. Offutt was the Panther's highest scorer, notching a second place finish with a 9.850. The closest score by Pitt following Offutt's was a 9.750 posted by Dotson, which was good for fourth. Pearson and Laymon also put up scores in the 9.7 range, scoring a 9.725 and 9.700 respectively. Schindel scored a 9.675 on the event while Reichert rounded out the scores with a 9.525.
The Panthers finished the evening on beam with a score of 48.075. However, it wasn't enough as the Tar Heel's floor score of a 48.725 pushed them past Pitt in the end. The Panthers did however take first, third and fourth place on the podium. Offutt, who was already having a fantastic meet, scored her third 9.850 of the afternoon. Kelly Burak tied her career high on the event with a 9.825 placing her on the podium in third place while Soto posted a fourth place finish with a season high 9.750. Laura Kummerle hit a 9.500, Reichert a 9.100 and Dotson an 8.975.
The Panthers will conclude their regular season at Kentucky on March 13 prior to heading to Washington, D.C. for EAGL Championships. The meet against the Wildcats is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
