PITTSBURGH - The Pitt men's soccer team ended its second exhibition match of preseason in a scoreless draw Wednesday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field against the Saint Francis Red Flash.
The Panthers out-shot the Red Flash 10-9, while both teams tallied four shots on goal apiece.
Seven different Pitt players attempted shots, four of which were on goal. Senior forward Patrick Dixon led the team with two shots on goal, while junior midfielder Romeo Charron and freshman midfielder Alec Anselmo each pitched in one shot on goal.
"Saint Francis is a good team," said head coach Joe Luxbacher. "I thought we were more solid defensively than last night and in general. We created some good chances tonight, but just couldn't finish."
The shutout was led by senior goalkeeper Dan Lynd who had two saves in the first half. The third save of the opening period came from freshman defender Kyle Brathwaite who made an impressive sliding save in goal after an attempted block by Lynd. The final save of the night came from Mikal Outcalt who made his first collegiate appearance.
"A shutout is good," said Luxbacher. "We're looking for top defense that wins championships. You need to score goals, but the top teams are the best defensive teams."
The Panthers continue to grow during preseason after playing two exhibition games. The large group of freshmen is starting to make their mark on the field. Defender Curren Page tallied three shots in the second period that could've changed the course of the game.
"I thought Curren Page did a good job at left back," said Luxbacher. "He's a versatile player that can play there or left midfield as well."
Pitt will wrap up preseason games Sunday, Aug. 23 against Calfornia (Pa.). Kickoff is slated for noon at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
