LATROBE, Pa. -- For the second consecutive week, the University of Pittsburgh women's cross country team claimed first place as the Panthers won the St. Vincent Invitational on Saturday morning.
Junior Karli O'Neill was Pitt's top finishers and placed third overall in a time of 18:58.6, which established a new career-best. She led five Panthers who finished inside the top-10 of the race.
"I thought we did an excellent job overall today," Coach Adam Bray said. "We wanted to be aggressive early on and assert ourselves in the front of the race, which is what we did. Karli has been looking really good in practice so I was expecting a breakout performance for her and she provided that. We had multiple personal-bests today which is what we are always striving for. I was pleased with the effort and I am excited to see what we can continue to do moving forward."
Also finishing inside the top-10 included freshmen Anja Weiler and Miranda Salvo who placed fifth and sixth overall, respectively. Weiler ran a time of 19:16.3, while Salvo was four seconds behind her in a time of 19:20.8. Both were personal-bests.
Rounding out the scoring for Pitt was senior Alexandra Cady in ninth place (19:26.2) and freshman Makenzie Zeh in tenth (19:32.9).
The Panthers tallied 33 points overall to win the team competition, and were followed by Seton Hill (36 points), Cal (Pa.) (78 points), Waynesburg (115) and Grove City (172 point).
Seton Hill's Chelsea Poole won the race in 18:46.3, while Cal's Julie Friend was second in 18:56.4.
The Panthers return to action next Saturday when they travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to participate in the Roy Griak Invitational.
