
Cross Country Runs Well at Duquesne Duals

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh cross country teams opened the 2015 season on Saturday at the Duquesne Duals with solid individual performances at Schenley Park.
WOMEN:
The women's team defeated all but one team and was led by freshman Gillian Schriever and sophomore Madeline Schmiedeknecht who notched top-10 finishes.
In her first collegiate race, Schriever proved to be a contender as she was in the lead pack the entire race en route to a second place finish. Schriever posted a 5K time of 18:34.4 and was just four seconds behind Duquesne's top runner Jenna Gigliotti who won the race.
Schmiedeknecht placed seventh overall in a time of 19:04.7 to help lead the Panthers contingency who placed four inside the top-20, along with Abby Peters who took 12th and Samantha Owens who took 19th.
The Panthers raced 28 of their 40 athletes on Saturday, and held out some of their top performers including Melanie Vlasic and Hillary Boxheimer.
MEN:
Chris Pastore led the men's team with a fourth place, and was followed by freshman Sebastian Curtin in 12th and sophomore Billy Caldwell in 14th.
Pastore had a solid race and posted a time of 26:18, which was just nine seconds off the first place finisher Stephan Listabarth of Temple.
The Panthers are back in action next weekend when the head to Buffalo for the UB Stampede Invitational. Both the Pitt men's and women's `A' teams will be in action in Buffalo.
