2017 SCHEDULE
PITTSBURGH – Fresh off of an East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) championship, Pitt women’s gymnastics head coach Debbie Yohman announced the team’s 2016-17 slate this afternoon.
The Panthers will host three meets in January to kick off the season, taking to the road before returning in early March. The Panthers are set to face off against heated rival West Virginia on two separate occasions, in addition to trips to powerhouses Auburn and Penn State.
“I am pleased to announce our 2017 schedule. We are very happy to be hosting Kent State in December for our Blue-Gold intrasquad/meet the team night to kick off the season early,” said Yohman. We have strong competition coming into the Field House for the bulk of our home schedule in January – Big 10, Big 12 NCAA regional qualifiers and EAGL opponent UNC. The remainder of our season will consist of EAGL and regional teams, plus a few that we meet occasionally. These teams will help us gauge the progress we’ve made in our quest to defend our EAGL title and to qualify for NCAA’s.
“In addition to the return of Penn State to our schedule, we will see Iowa, and will be down at Auburn for a good tune-up before EAGLs. Also we have continued the Backyard dual with West Virginia here on Friday and there on Sunday the first weekend in March, which was very instrumental in sharpening our performances prior to championships last year. We have a nice mixture of duals and quads this year, and a mix of teams which will allow us to build confidence and require us to raise our level of competitiveness.”
Pitt will kick things off on Friday, Dec. 9, hosting Kent State in the annual blue-gold scrimmage. The regular season will get underway a month later, as the Panthers welcome Ohio State on Saturday, Jan. 7.
The Backyard Brawl will take place on Friday, Jan. 13, as West Virginia visits Fitzgerald Field House in the first of three meetings before the Panthers make their first road trip of the season, traveling to Durham, NH for a tri-meet with New Hampshire and Southern Connecticut.
The Panthers return to Pittsburgh on Friday, Jan. 27, hosting EAGL rival North Carolina in what will be the final home meet in more than a month.
Saturday, Feb. 4 is a trip across the turnpike for Pitt as they take to Temple for a quad-meet with the Owls, Westchester and Ursinus. The following Friday the Panthers will get a preview of the EAGL Championship site, traveling to NC State for a quad-meet with the Wolfpack, William & Mary and North Carolina.
On Friday, Feb. 17 the Panthers visit the nation’s capital, squaring off with George Washington, Iowa, William & Mary and Maryland at George Washington. The much anticipated dual with Penn State is slated for Saturday, Feb. 25 in State College, Pa.
The Panthers close out home action on Friday, March 3, hosting West Virginia, Michigan State and Towson in a quad-meet at Fitzgerald Field House.
Another Backyard Brawl is slated to take place on Sunday, March 5 in Morgantown, W.Va., before the Panthers conclude regular season action at Auburn on Friday, March 10.
The 2017 EAGL Championships are set for Cary, N.C., on the campus of NC State on Saturday March 18, with the NCAA Regional Championships on April 1. The six regional sites are booked for the campuses of Washington, Florida, Arkansas, Illinois, Nebraska and West Virginia.
The two-day NCAA Championships will be held in St. Louis from April 14-15.
Individual meet tickets are now available for each of the Panthers’ four regular season matches. Tickets can be purchased here or by calling 1-800-643-PITT.
